Welcome to The Silence Issue

Jurriaan Kamp | July 2008 issue

Silence. It is a rare experience in most lives. This is the one thing our modern, 24/7 world hardly provides. We even seem to fight the quiet. Elevators and parking garages are filled with music. Radios play where no one really listens—just to fill the void. Are we scared of silence? Do we need silence? Where do we find it? How does it affect us? These questions came up during one of our editorial meetings last year. So we decided to dedicate this issue to the wonder and power of silence. All the stories and all the images on the following pages touch upon this topic. We found the quietest place on Earth, and we learned how the experience of silence amplifies our spirits. Also, while working on this issue, we realized perhaps once more that the very first step in any better and wiser direction begins with a moment of silence. So this ode to silence, reader, is an ode to you. A moment of contemplation before your next positive move. Enjoy this issue. Enjoy the silence.
